Also called · picky eater · refusing food · dog won’t eat · cat not eating
What it looks like
- Sniffs the bowl and walks away
- Eats treats and human food happily
- Sits by the bowl and cries at you
- Eats well some days, not at all on others
Why it happens
The owner’s response is what grows the problem
If reaching for something tastier becomes a pattern, the animal learns that holding out or begging persistently produces a better reward. Plenty of households struggle with fussy eating, and in many of them the owner’s own behaviour is what reinforces it.
The range of taste is set at weaning
What an animal tastes around weaning shapes its later preferences. Dogs and cats raised on a single food from weaning to six months end up with a narrow range, which becomes a real problem later when a therapeutic diet is needed. Animals raised on varied smells, tastes and textures will at least try something new.
The food itself may have gone off
An opened bag loses aroma, the fat oxidises and mould can grow. From the animal’s side it has simply stopped being food. If refusal started suddenly, check the food before anything else.
Cats are genuinely capricious
A cat may reject today what it ate happily yesterday. One explanation is that wild cats never lived on mice alone — they hunted insects, snakes, lizards and small birds, and that variety-seeking remains.
It may be temperature and texture
Cats prefer food at body temperature over cold food. They also dislike powdery food even at 10% fat, yet will eat a paste with no fat at all. What cats like most is roughly 10% fat and 60–70% moisture — close to the composition of a mouse.
What to do
Never starve a cat into eating
Cats will endure long periods of hunger rather than eat food they dislike, so the wait-it-out approach used with dogs is dangerous. If a cat has not eaten for a long time, mix in a small amount of something more palatable and watch.
Cut the treats first
Treats are often not counted as calories at all. Jerky is generally calorie-dense. Check whether treats are filling them up before you change anything else.
Warm the food
Warming to roughly body temperature releases volatile compounds and stimulates appetite. It is the standard first step for a cat that has gone off its food.
Look at where they eat
A loud noise or an unpleasant event during a meal can get associated with that place and that food. Try moving the bowl somewhere quiet where they feel safe.
Watch out for
An obese cat that suddenly stops eating can progress to hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver). Here, not eating is itself what creates the new disease.
A sick animal not eating is not simply a side effect: infection and stress raise signalling molecules that suppress the feeding centre in the brain. It is thought to be a defence that conserves energy for the immune response.
See a vet if
An adult cat that has not eaten for two to three days needs to be seen immediately.
Noticeable weight loss
Vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy alongside it
Common questions
It can work with dogs, but it is dangerous with cats. A cat will choose hunger, and an overweight cat that suddenly stops eating can develop hepatic lipidosis.
Offering variety around weaning does widen the range of what they will accept. But swapping food every time an adult refuses a meal is closer to teaching them to hold out.
