Signs to look for
- separation anxiety
- excessive barking
- (cats) sucking and eating blankets or fabric
- eating faeces
Why it happens
Tryptophan is the raw material for serotonin, and it competes with other amino acids for the route into the brain. That is where the argument that a high-protein diet can work against you comes from.
Alpha-casozepine, derived from milk protein, is used as a calming compound in related products.
Wool sucking — Siamese cats sucking on blankets — is the classic example.
There is even work on free-roaming cats suggesting that poor nutrition in the mother during pregnancy changes the temperament of the kittens.
Signs that mean go to the vet
Supplements alone do not solve this. Environmental change and behaviour modification have to go with it
