Signs to look for
- trying to urinate frequently but passing little
- staying in the litter box a long time
- blood in the urine
Why it happens
Which type of stone forms varies by breed. Dalmatians are known for purine stones; Schnauzers and Shih Tzus lean toward struvite.
The management target for urine pH is 6.2–6.4. Too acidic tips toward calcium oxalate, too alkaline toward struvite. Solving one brings on the other — that is the dilemma.
Urine turns alkaline after eating (the alkaline tide). So splitting the food across several meals rather than one large one works in favour of stone prevention.
Recurrence is reported at 48% over three years. This is not something you manage once.
Signs that mean go to the vet
Inability to urinate, or blood in the urine, means see a vet immediately. Urethral obstruction is a race against the clock
Dairy treats may be associated with calcium oxalate stones
